A commercial truck with a cracked windshield is not just a maintenance issue. Under 49 CFR 393.60, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires that commercial vehicle windshields be free of damage that obstructs the driver’s field of vision. An inspector at a weigh station or during a roadside check can place a truck out of service for a crack that crosses into the driver’s direct sightline. That out-of-service notation goes on the carrier’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability record. The cost of that violation is far higher than the cost of a windshield.

How commercial truck glass differs from passenger vehicle glass
A Class 8 semi windshield is roughly twice the surface area of a standard passenger car windshield. Most truck cab designs use either a two-piece configuration (left and right panels separated by a center post) or a wide single-piece design. Both are laminated glass, like a passenger windshield, but the glass thickness, frame tolerances, and the volume of adhesive required are all different.
Height is also a factor. Most passenger vehicle auto glass shops are set up for vehicles with a hood height of three to five feet. Semi truck cabs put the windshield seven to nine feet off the ground. Without scaffolding, step ladders, and the right suction-cup rigs, a standard passenger vehicle technician cannot safely remove and seat a truck windshield.
Commercial trucks also take more road vibration than passenger vehicles due to their weight, axle count, and the loads they carry. The adhesive bond on a truck windshield needs to hold under continuous high-load conditions. We use commercial-grade high-viscosity urethane adhesive rated for heavy vehicle applications, not the same formulation used on sedans.
Not all auto glass shops stock truck-specific glass sizes or have supplier relationships to source them quickly. We do.
FMCSA compliance and documentation
After windshield replacement on a commercial vehicle, carriers need documentation for maintenance records. This matters for three reasons.
DOT roadside inspectors can request maintenance records during an inspection. Insurance claims require documentation of the repair, including the date, the glass specification, and the technician credentials. Repeated out-of-service violations affect the carrier’s CSA score and, at a threshold, can trigger a compliance review.

Priority dispatch. Fleet account trucks move to the front of the scheduling queue. If a truck finishes a long haul at 6 AM with a fresh crack and needs to depart again by noon, that appointment gets prioritized.
Account invoicing. Fleet accounts receive invoices on net terms rather than per-visit payment. This makes glass repair a predictable line item in your maintenance budget rather than an unscheduled expense.
The mobile replacement process for commercial trucks
Parts confirmation before scheduling. We confirm truck make, model, and cab type and verify glass availability before booking. We do not schedule a visit if the right glass is not ready to install.
Mobile unit setup at your location. Our commercial mobile unit carries scaffolding, heavy-duty suction rigs, extended cold-knife tools, and the adhesive volume required for truck-sized windshields. We do not need a lift or a service bay. A flat yard surface with enough clearance around the vehicle is sufficient.
Removal. Old urethane is cut cleanly without disturbing cab panels, trim, or door seals. Each trim piece comes off in reverse order and goes back on after the new glass is installed.
Frame preparation. The pinch weld is cleaned, trimmed to a uniform height, and primed. Any rust, which is common on trucks that run in rain and road salt conditions, is treated before the primer goes on. This step is not optional on commercial vehicles; frame corrosion that gets sealed under the new adhesive bead will eventually compromise the bond.
Adhesive application and installation. Commercial-grade high-modulus urethane is applied in a continuous bead. The glass is positioned and pressed into place with suction cup rigs that can handle the weight of large truck windshields. Alignment is checked against the cab frame before the crew lets go.
Cure time. Cure time for commercial truck windshields runs longer than for passenger vehicles: two to three hours minimum before the truck should be driven at highway speeds. We give fleet managers a specific time based on adhesive temperature ratings and the ambient temperature at the depot.
ADAS recalibration. Modern trucks with forward collision avoidance, lane departure systems, adaptive cruise, or other camera-based systems require recalibration after windshield replacement. We carry portable calibration equipment for major truck platform systems and perform recalibration on site.
