Smashed Window or Shattered Windshield: Urgent Auto Glass in Intown Atlanta
Broken into overnight in a deck off Ponce? Windshield taken out by a rock on the Connector? Urgent jobs go to the front of our day. Midtown Glass Atlanta is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm at 510 Glen Iris Dr NE, and a car that is unsafe to drive or standing open to the weather gets first call on the schedule rather than the next free slot. Call before mid-afternoon on a weekday and there is usually a same-day opening for door glass or a windshield on a common vehicle. If the car still drives, the shop is the fastest route: chip repair starts at $49, replacement starts at $199, and we bill the major carriers directly. If it does not drive, our mobile crew can come to the car during shop hours. And if this happened on a Friday night, read the first section below before you do anything else. Call (404) 873-6991.
Broken into overnight: what to do first, and what to do on a Friday night
Photograph it, clear the glass, cover it from the inside
Most intown auto glass emergencies are not crashes. They are a smashed door window in a parking deck or on a street in Old Fourth Ward, Poncey-Highland or West Midtown, found at seven in the morning with the seat covered in pebbles of tempered glass.
Here is the order to do it in. Photograph the car before you touch anything, from a few feet back and then close in on the broken opening, and photograph the interior too. File the claim that night or first thing, because the photographs are worth far more to an adjuster than a description written later. Then clear the loose glass: gloves on, a shop vacuum if you can get one, and pay attention to the seat rails, the door pocket, the carpet under the pedals and the slot at the bottom of the door where the glass falls into the cavity. Cover the opening from the inside of the frame rather than the outside. A contractor bag or a sheet of plastic sheeting taped to the inner door frame will hold through a night of rain and will not peel off and flap the way tape on the outside does. Then move the car under cover if you can, a deck level or a friend's garage, because an open cabin and an Atlanta downpour is a bill nobody wants on top of the glass.
If this happened on a Friday night, that sequence is what keeps the car secure and dry until Monday morning. Call (404) 873-6991 when we open at 8am with the year, make and model and which window it was. Door glass on common vehicles is usually a same-day job.
Shattered windshield, and what not to do with it
It holds together, which is exactly what fools people
A windshield is two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer bonded between them, which is why it spiders instead of falling out of the frame. That interlayer is also why a broken windshield feels safer than it is. The pane is bonded structure. It backstops the passenger airbag and it carries load that helps the roof resist crush, and once the glass is broken through it stops doing either job the way it was designed to.
So do not drive a car whose windshield is shattered across the driver's line of sight. Do not tape across the outside and take it onto the Connector. Do not run the defroster hard on a long crack, because a sharp temperature change at the glass is what turns a long crack into a full-width one. Park it somewhere lit, photograph it, and call us.
If the damage is a chip or a short crack rather than a shattered pane, the car is usually still drivable and the job is a resin repair from $49 rather than a $199 replacement. Bring it in the same day if you can. An intown pothole or one cold night will otherwise make the decision for you.
The fastest version of the day usually starts at Glen Iris
Ten to fifteen minutes from most intown addresses
The shop is at 510 Glen Iris Dr NE, one block off Ponce de Leon Ave, a short walk from Ponce City Market and the Eastside BeltLine Trail, with North Ave MARTA close enough that you can hand over the keys and carry on with your morning. From most intown addresses that is 10 to 15 minutes.
That distance is the reason the shop usually beats a mobile visit on an urgent job. The glass, the primer, the urethane and the calibration floor are already here, and nobody has to cross town through a convention letting out at the Georgia World Congress Center or a game finishing at Mercedes-Benz Stadium or State Farm Arena. If the car drives, driving it here is normally the shorter path to keys back.
Replacement starts at $199, and camera calibration, on the vehicles that need it, runs $150 to $400. Safe drive-away time after a replacement is typically 1 to 4 hours depending on the adhesive, the temperature and the humidity, and you get the number for that day before you leave. Fleet and semi-truck glass does not run out of this shop; that work goes through the main Glass Inc location at glassinc.net.
Filing the claim without guessing at the number
Comprehensive, no-fault, and your own policy sets the number
A break-in and a rock strike are both comprehensive claims, and comprehensive is generally handled as no-fault, so this is not the same animal as an at-fault collision claim. What it costs you comes down to your own policy rather than to anything about this state. Georgia is not one of the states where a glass claim automatically costs the driver nothing. Some comprehensive policies waive the deductible on chip repair, and a few carriers sell optional full-glass coverage as a rider. We read your policy before we touch the car and tell you what you will actually owe.
We bill State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Liberty Mutual and USAA directly, so in most cases you are not paying up front and chasing the money back later. Two things make a break-in claim go smoothly: the photographs you took before you cleaned up, and a police report number if you filed one. Bring both to the appointment. Every pane we fit is OEM or original-equipment-equivalent and meets FMVSS 205, and workmanship on the installation carries a lifetime warranty.
Urgent Auto Glass FAQs
Are you open outside normal business hours?
No. Midtown Glass Atlanta is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and that is the honest answer rather than a phone line that takes a message overnight. What we do inside those hours is put unsafe and open vehicles at the front of the schedule. If the damage happens in the evening, the section above tells you how to make the car secure and dry until we open at 8am.
What counts as urgent?
Damage that makes the car unsafe or leaves it open. A shattered or spidered windshield across the driver's view. A smashed door or back window after a break-in. A long crack that has started to travel. A car standing open to rain. If you are not sure which side of the line yours falls on, call and describe it. We would rather talk it through than have you drive on something you should not.
Can you do it today?
Often, yes. On common vehicles with the glass on hand, a call before mid-afternoon on a weekday usually finds a same-day slot, and urgent work is scheduled ahead of routine work. If your glass has to be ordered, or the day is already full, we will say so on the call and give you the next real opening rather than a hopeful one.
How do I keep the car safe until my appointment?
Photograph everything first, then vacuum out what glass you can with gloves on, paying attention to the seat rails and the door cavity. Tape a contractor bag or plastic sheeting over the opening from the inside of the frame, which holds through rain far better than tape on the outside. Park under cover if there is any, a deck level or a garage, and somewhere lit. Do not drive a car whose windshield is broken across your line of sight.
Do you charge extra because it is urgent?
No. An urgent job is priced like any other job. Chip repair starts at $49, windshield replacement starts at $199, and door glass is quoted per vehicle because the pane, the regulator and the labor vary so much between models. We quote your exact car before we start, and we bill the major carriers directly if the claim is going through insurance.
Can you come to my parking deck?
Sometimes. A mobile crew can work in a deck when the building allows a contractor in, the space has room to open both doors and get around the car, and the level has the clearance to lift a windshield over the cowl. Plenty of intown decks fail at least one of those. Camera calibration cannot happen in a deck at all. Describe where the car is parked and we will tell you honestly whether it will work.
What if my glass has to be ordered?
We secure the car first so the interior does not take rain or a second visit from whoever broke in, then we book you for the day the glass lands. Door glass and windshields for common vehicles are usually quick to source. Less common panes take longer, and we give you the date the supplier gives us rather than an optimistic guess.
