Why Windshields Are Different from Other Auto Glass
Your windshield is laminated glass, and that matters for understanding your repair options.
Laminated windshield construction bonds two glass sheets around a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film interlayer. When a rock or piece of road debris strikes the outer surface, the impact creates a chip or cavity in the outer glass layer, but the PVB film holds the assembly together. The windshield does not shatter. That is by design, and it is also what makes chip repair possible: the damage is contained to the outer layer, and injected resin can fill and stabilize the break.
Side windows, rear quarter glass, and the back window use tempered glass, which shatters into small blunt pieces on impact. Tempered glass cannot be repaired. If you have a crack in your door window, that is a replacement job, not a repair.

Types of Windshield Damage
Chips fall into recognizable patterns, and the pattern affects both repairability and the technique used:
Bullseye: A circular impact with a cone-shaped pit at the center and one or more concentric rings. This is one of the cleanest chip types to repair. The cone creates a natural entry channel for resin, and the circular geometry fills predictably. Bullseyes up to about 1.5 inches in diameter are typically repairable.
Star break: Short cracks radiate from a central impact point, like arms on a starburst. The arms are what complicate the repair; resin has to travel down each channel under vacuum pressure. Repairable when the arms extend less than three inches from center. Arms beyond that length are harder to fill reliably and may require replacement.
Combination break: A central bullseye cone with radiating arms, combining features of both types above. Common on I-285 and I-75 where gravel hits at highway speed. Repairable when the total diameter stays under about an inch and the arms are short.
Floater crack: A crack that starts away from the windshield edge and runs across the glass surface. Cracks under six inches that have not contaminated with moisture or road grime are candidates for resin repair. Over six inches, resin cannot hold the crack reliably under long-term stress.
Edge crack: Starts within two inches of the windshield border. Edge cracks grow fast because the border zone is under the highest structural stress. These almost always require replacement, not repair.
What Makes a Chip Unrepairable
Most chips fail the repairability assessment for one of these reasons:
Contamination. A chip that sat through several hot Atlanta days may have moisture, pine pollen, or road grit driven into the break by the heat cycling. Contaminated breaks show a white or gray haze inside the chip when viewed from the right angle. Resin does not bond properly to contaminated glass, and the repair will be visible and potentially short-lived.
Depth. A chip that pushed through both glass layers, which you can feel as a rough texture on the inner windshield surface, requires replacement. Resin injection addresses the outer layer.
Location. A chip or crack in the driver’s central line of sight is typically replaced even if it technically meets size criteria. Even a technically clean repair leaves a slight optical distortion, and that distortion directly in front of the driver is a safety concern.
Size. Chips larger than 1.5 inches across and cracks longer than six inches exceed what resin fill can reliably stabilize under road vibration and temperature change.
The Resin Injection Process
Chip repair is more precise than it appears from the outside. Here is what actually happens:
Cleaning and prep. The technician picks any loose glass fragments out of the break and cleans the area dry. For bullseye and combination chips, a small pilot hole is drilled at the apex of the impact cone to create a clean resin entry point. This drill goes only through the outer glass layer.
Bridge and vacuum assembly. A spring-loaded injector bridge clamps over the chip with a rubber gasket forming an airtight seal around the break.
Vacuum cycle. The injector creates negative pressure inside the break, pulling out trapped air. This step is run for 30 seconds to two minutes and may be repeated two or three times for star breaks with multiple arms. The vacuum cycle is what most DIY kits skip entirely, and skipping it leaves air pockets inside the repair that show up as cloudiness.
Resin injection. Optical-grade clear resin flows into the break under the slight pressure differential between the vacuum chamber and atmosphere. The resin travels into every cavity of the chip. The technician may alternate between vacuum and pressure to push resin through all channels of a complex break.
UV curing. A handheld UV lamp cures the resin in 45 to 90 seconds. Professional resins are formulated to match the refractive index of the glass, which is why a well-done repair nearly disappears rather than showing up as a milky spot.
Surface polish. A razor and glass polish remove any resin that seeped above the glass surface, leaving the area flush with the surrounding glass.
Total time on site: 20 to 30 minutes for most chips. You can drive immediately after a chip repair. No cure waiting period.
Repair vs. Replacement Costs
Chip repair runs $50 to $75, short crack repair runs $75 to $100, and full windshield replacement runs $200 to $600 for most passenger vehicles. Vehicles with heads-up displays, heated glass, acoustic laminate, or multiple ADAS sensors add to replacement cost. Comprehensive insurance typically covers chip repairs with zero deductible, so many Atlanta drivers pay nothing for a repair that would have become a $400 replacement.

ADAS and Windshield Replacement
When a chip cannot be repaired, full replacement brings one additional step on many newer vehicles. Vehicles made after roughly 2015 with lane departure warning, adaptive cruise, or automatic emergency braking have a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield, calibrated to that specific windshield’s geometry. After replacement, even with correct OEM or OEE glass, the camera needs recalibration using calibration targets and a scan tool through the OBD port. We handle static ADAS calibration in-house; for most single-camera vehicles it adds 30 to 45 minutes.
