What type of damage do you see?

Your windshield takes a hit on I-285 and suddenly you are wondering whether your insurance actually covers this. The answer depends on one thing: what type of policy you carry.

The coverage question starts with comprehensive

Standard auto insurance in Georgia comes in several layers. If you carry liability-only coverage — the minimum required by Georgia law — windshield damage is not covered. You pay the full cost out of pocket.

If you carry comprehensive coverage (also called “other than collision” or OTC), windshield damage is typically covered. Comprehensive pays for losses that are not the result of a collision: falling objects, road debris, hail, vandalism, and glass breakage.

Most Georgia drivers who own or finance a vehicle carry comprehensive. Lenders usually require it. If you are unsure whether you have it, check your declarations page (the summary page your insurer sends with your policy). Look for “comprehensive” or “OTC” in the coverage list.

What Georgia requires — and what it does not

A handful of states require insurers to waive your deductible for windshield claims. Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Arizona have zero-deductible glass laws. Georgia does not. Your comprehensive deductible applies to glass claims unless your policy specifically includes a “full glass” or “zero-deductible glass” rider.

That rider is worth asking about if you drive a lot on Atlanta highways. For a modest premium increase, it eliminates your out-of-pocket cost for both repairs and replacements.

Repairs and replacements are treated differently

Even without a full glass rider, many Georgia insurers draw a line between repairs and replacements.

Repairs — chips smaller than a quarter, cracks shorter than six inches — are often covered with the deductible waived entirely. The logic: a $65 repair now prevents a $400 replacement later. Most carriers prefer to pay for the repair.

Replacements usually require you to pay your comprehensive deductible. That deductible might be $100, $250, or $500 depending on what you chose when your policy was set up.

This distinction matters. If your chip is small and you have not filed a claim recently, call your insurer — or call us — before assuming you owe anything out of pocket.

How deductibles change what you actually pay

Here is how the math works for a windshield replacement in Atlanta, where a typical job runs $250 to $600 depending on your vehicle and whether ADAS calibration is required:

Your deductibleReplacement costYou pay
$0 (full glass rider)$350$0
$100$350$100
$250$350$250
$500$350$350 (glass cost, not the deductible)
$500$650$500

When your deductible is higher than the replacement cost, you pay the glass cost, not the deductible. In that case, filing a claim saves you nothing and still puts a claim on your record. Pay out of pocket instead.

What comprehensive coverage actually pays for

For reference, comprehensive typically applies to:

  • Road debris (rocks and gravel kicked up by trucks on I-75 and I-285)
  • Hail damage during Georgia’s storm season
  • Falling objects such as tree branches or storm debris
  • Vandalism
  • Animal strikes
  • Flooding or weather events

What it does not cover: damage from a collision with another vehicle or a fixed object. That falls under collision coverage. If your windshield shattered in an accident, the claim goes through collision, not comprehensive, and a different deductible applies.

How to check your coverage before you need it

The easiest time to review glass coverage is before anything breaks. Call your agent and ask three questions:

  1. Do I have comprehensive coverage?
  2. What is my comprehensive deductible?
  3. Do I have a glass endorsement or full glass rider?

The answers take five minutes to get and can prevent a surprise bill later.

What if you do not have comprehensive?

You are responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement. Options include:

  • Paying out of pocket (call Midtown Glass Atlanta at (404) 873-6991 for an exact quote for your vehicle)
  • Asking about payment plans at time of service
  • Contacting your agent about adding comprehensive — get the premium difference compared to what you’d spend on one replacement

Frequently asked questions

Does a glass claim raise my insurance rates?

In most cases, no. Comprehensive glass claims are classified as not-at-fault events. Most major carriers do not increase premiums for a single glass claim in a policy period. Filing multiple claims in a short span could trigger a rate review. Ask your agent directly if you have had other recent claims.

Can my insurer require me to use a specific shop?

No. Georgia law gives you the right to choose your auto glass provider. Your insurer can suggest shops from their network but cannot require you to use them. You can bring your vehicle to Midtown Glass Atlanta regardless of what your insurer recommends.

What if my vehicle has ADAS cameras?

Most vehicles built after 2016 have a forward-facing camera mounted behind the windshield. After any windshield replacement, that camera needs to be recalibrated to factory specs. Insurance covers calibration as part of a proper repair — mention ADAS when filing so the calibration cost is captured in the claim.

Is vandalism damage covered?

Yes. Windshield vandalism is a comprehensive claim.
