A vehicle has more glass than most people consciously count. There is the windshield, obviously, but also front door windows, rear door windows, fixed rear quarter glass on many sedans and coupes, the back window, and often a panoramic or standard sunroof panel. Each piece has a specific job: the windshield is a structural component, the back window houses the defroster grid, the sunroof seals a large opening in the roof. When any of it gets cracked, chipped, or broken, the fix depends on which piece it is and what it is made of.

Two Glass Types, Two Different Sets of Options
Car glass comes in two forms, and mixing them up leads to unrealistic expectations.
Laminated glass is the front windshield. Two glass sheets are bonded around a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film. When a rock hits the outer surface, the PVB film holds the glass together even if the outer layer chips or cracks. This laminated structure is what makes chip and crack repair possible: the damage is limited to the outer glass layer, and optical resin injected into the break bonds to both sides and restores structural integrity.
Tempered glass covers everything else on the car: front side windows, rear side windows, rear quarter glass, and the back window. Tempered glass is heat-treated so it shatters into hundreds of small blunt pieces on impact rather than into large sharp shards. That is a safety feature, not an accident. But it also means there is no resin repair for tempered damage. Any break in a tempered panel, no matter how small it looks, means the full pane comes out and a new one goes in.
Some panoramic sunroof panels on newer vehicles use laminated glass to reduce injury risk from large overhead panels. Most standard sunroof panels are still tempered.

Windshield Chips from Highway Debris
The most common repair we do. I-75 through downtown, I-285 around the perimeter, and GA-400 north through Buckhead all generate chips from gravel kicked up by trucks, shredded tire debris, and loose material falling from contractor flatbeds.
Chips that are smaller than a quarter and have not spread into cracks are candidates for resin repair. The process takes 20 to 30 minutes and costs $50 to $75 in most cases. Most comprehensive insurance policies cover chip repairs with zero deductible, so many Atlanta drivers pay nothing out of pocket.
The time window for repair matters more in Atlanta than most places. Summer glass surface temperatures of 150 degrees or higher, combined with cold air conditioning cycles, put chips under constant thermal stress. A chip that was repairable Monday can spread to a six-inch crack by Thursday after a few heat-cool cycles in a parking lot. Same-day or next-day repair is always the smarter move in summer months.
Side Window Breakage
Side windows shatter completely when broken. There is no repair option. Back Window Replacement
Back glass with a defroster grid requires careful attention to the electrical tabs bonded at the edges. A technician who pulls the glass carelessly can break the defroster circuit at the connection point. We test the defroster after installation on every rear window replacement.
Sunroof Leaks
Most sunroof leaks in Atlanta are not broken glass. They are clogged drain tubes. Each sunroof corner has a rubber drain tube that routes rainwater down through the door pillars and out under the car. Pine pollen, leaves, and road grit clog these tubes in Atlanta regularly, especially after spring. When the tube blocks, rainwater backs up and finds its way into the headliner or down the pillar.
