What type of damage do you see?

Atlanta roads are hard on auto glass. The construction corridors on I-75 and I-285 kick up gravel constantly. Smash-and-grab theft happens in Midtown and Buckhead parking decks several times a week. A spring hailstorm can pit an entire windshield in ten minutes, and July heat turns a small chip into a long crack overnight.

Midtown Glass Atlanta has been at 510 Glen Iris Dr NE since the business opened under the Glass Inc name in 1956. Over seven decades of serving Atlanta drivers, we have seen virtually every type of auto glass damage this city can produce. This page covers what we fix, how we fix it, and what it costs.

The Two Types of Auto Glass

Every glass panel on your car is either laminated or tempered, and that determines your repair options.

Laminated glass is your windshield. Two glass sheets are bonded together with a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film layer between them. Impact causes the outer layer to chip or crack, but the film holds the glass in one piece. This is why a rock chip does not shatter the whole panel, and why chips and short cracks can be repaired with resin injection.

Tempered glass is every other window: front and rear door glass, rear quarter panels, and the back window. It is heat-treated to break into small rounded pieces on impact rather than sharp shards. There is no repair option for tempered glass. Any crack or break in a tempered panel means full replacement of that pane.

What We Fix

Windshield Chip Repair

This is our most common job, and the fastest. Rock chips from highway gravel and construction debris create damage that falls into a few predictable patterns: a bullseye chip with a cone-shaped pit at center, a star break with short cracks radiating outward, or a combination chip that has features of both. All three are repairable if they are smaller than a quarter and have not been contaminated by moisture or grime sitting in the break.

The repair process: we clean and dry the break, attach a vacuum bridge over the chip, and inject optical-grade resin under negative pressure. The resin fills every cavity. UV light cures it hard, and a final polish smooths the surface. Done in 20 to 30 minutes. You drive away immediately.

Chip repairs cost $50 to $75 in most cases, and most comprehensive insurance policies cover them with no deductible.

Windshield Crack Repair

A crack under six inches that has not reached the windshield edge can often be repaired using the same resin injection technique, with a drill stop at one end to prevent the crack from extending during treatment. Cracks in the driver’s direct line of sight, or any crack longer than six inches, require full windshield replacement.

Windshield Replacement

We use OEM or OEE glass matched to your vehicle’s specifications, including embedded sensors, heating elements, and antenna systems. After installation, the urethane adhesive needs one to two hours to cure before the vehicle is safe to drive. For vehicles with forward-facing cameras tied to lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, ADAS recalibration follows the replacement.

Side Window Replacement

Shattered door glass gets cleared completely before new tempered glass goes in, including pieces trapped in the door cavity and weatherstripping channels. We stock glass for most Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, and BMW models. Most side window replacements finish in 45 to 90 minutes.

Rear Window Replacement

Back glass with a defroster grid requires careful work at the electrical connection points at the glass edges. We test the defroster function after installation before returning the vehicle.

Sunroof Service

We handle cracked or shattered sunroof glass, failed seals, and clogged drain tubes. Atlanta’s spring rain totals are high, and a sunroof drain that has not been cleaned in a few years frequently backs up and lets water run into the headliner or door pillar. Drain cleaning is a standalone service that takes under an hour.

Mirror Glass

Side mirror glass replacement takes 15 to 30 minutes and runs $50 to $150 depending on the housing type.

Insurance

Comprehensive coverage typically pays for chip and crack repairs with no deductible, because a repair costs the carrier far less than a replacement. For replacement work, your deductible applies, but we handle the billing directly with the carrier and file all paperwork on your behalf.

Why Fast Action Matters in Atlanta

Atlanta’s July heat bakes parked car glass to 150 degrees Fahrenheit or higher on south-facing surfaces. Turn on the air conditioning when you get in and the temperature drop at the chip location is severe. That thermal shock is what turns a $50 chip into a $400 replacement in the span of one afternoon. We have seen it happen the same day a customer first noticed the damage.

Georgia law also enforces this: O.C.G.A. Section 40-8-73 requires an unobstructed windshield view. Atlanta officers write citations for cracked windshields starting around $150. Getting the chip repaired quickly removes the violation.

Mobile Service

We cover all of metro Atlanta with mobile units that carry the same materials and equipment used in our shop. Whether your car is in a parking deck in Buckhead, a surface lot in Sandy Springs, or your driveway in Decatur, we come to you at no extra charge for most standard repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chip be repaired same day? Yes. Chip repairs are walk-in or same-day mobile appointments in most cases.

Does repair leave a mark? You can usually see where the chip was, but it no longer catches light and the structural integrity returns. If you want the damage gone completely, that means replacement.

How long after replacement can I drive? One to two hours for the urethane to cure, depending on ambient temperature and the product used. We tell you the exact time before we leave.

What if I have a dashcam or ADAS system? Tell us when you book. We handle ADAS calibration in-house for most vehicle makes, and we reinstall dashcam brackets and wiring after windshield replacement.

Will insurance cover my repair? Most comprehensive policies cover chip repairs at zero deductible. Call us first; we verify your coverage before you commit to an appointment.
