Night driving is when a degraded windshield announces itself. During the day, the fine scratches left by a worn wiper blade are nearly invisible. What Can Be Restored vs. What Requires Replacement
Professional polishing uses cerium oxide compounds and rotary buffing equipment to remove light surface scratches, water spot etching, and minor haze. It is the right call when the glass is structurally intact and the degradation is confined to the outer surface.
There are limits. Deep wiper scratches that you can feel with a fingernail, pollen etching that has pitted the surface beyond a certain depth, and any indication of PVB layer delamination (persistent fog that does not clean off from either side of the glass) are past what polishing can address. In those cases, replacement is the honest answer.
Seal and trim condition matters too, beyond appearance. The black urethane or rubber seal around your windshield is the primary waterproofing between the glass and the body. Seal material that has separated from the glass allows moisture into the adhesive layer and eventually into the vehicle. This creates water damage, promotes rust at the pinch weld, and weakens the structural bond between the glass and the body.
