You are driving south on I-85, holding the right lane near the Brookwood interchange, when a piece of gravel bounces off the cab of the truck ahead and hits your windshield. There is a sharp crack, and a chip the size of a nickel appears in the lower passenger corner of the glass. Your first instinct is to keep driving and deal with it later.
That instinct, more than the chip itself, is what turns a $65 repair into a $400 replacement.

Repair or Replace: The Decision That Determines Your Cost
The type, size, and location of the damage determines whether you need a repair or a full replacement.
Chips are impact craters from debris. The size guideline used across the industry: if the chip is no larger than a quarter and has no cracks radiating outward, it is almost always repairable. A technician injects clear resin into the void under vacuum pressure, cures it with UV light, and polishes the surface. The repair takes about 25 minutes and restores structural integrity. Cost: $50 to $75. You drive away immediately after.
Cracks are linear fractures that travel through the glass. A crack under six inches that is not at the glass edge and is not directly in the driver’s forward line of sight may still qualify for repair. Longer cracks, edge cracks within two inches of the border, and any crack in the driver’s primary viewing area require full replacement.
Tempered side and rear windows cannot be repaired at all. Tempered glass is engineered to shatter into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. Any break means a full replacement of the pane. There is no resin injection option.
The cost difference is significant. A chip repaired today costs $65. That same chip in Atlanta’s July heat, with daily temperatures pushing glass surfaces above 150 degrees, can spread to a 12-inch crack within 48 hours. At that point you are looking at a full replacement starting around $250 and climbing from there depending on your vehicle and whether it has ADAS cameras.
What the Repair Process Looks Like

- The technician cleans the chip or crack with a dental-style pick to remove grit and glass dust
- A vacuum injector draws residual air out of the void
- Clear polyurethane resin is injected under controlled pressure to fill the space
- A UV lamp cures the resin in place, bonding it to the surrounding glass
- The surface is polished flush
The result restores 80 to 95 percent of the original optical clarity. You will likely see a faint mark where the damage was in direct sunlight, but it will not scatter light or interrupt your vision. You can drive immediately after. The repair also stops crack propagation.
What Happens During a Windshield Replacement
When damage is too extensive for repair, here is how a proper replacement works at our shop on Glen Iris Drive:
Old glass removal: The urethane adhesive bond is cut around the perimeter and the damaged windshield is lifted free. This step requires patience. Rushing it damages the pinch weld channel and the painted metal edge that the new glass will bond to.
Pinch weld preparation: The metal channel is inspected for rust, cleaned, and primed. This is the step most budget shops skip or shortcut. Without proper primer on clean metal, the new adhesive will not bond correctly and the installation will leak.
New glass installation: A fresh bead of urethane adhesive is applied around the perimeter, the new windshield is lowered onto it, and the technician precisely aligns the glass to the body panels. Small retention pins or tape hold it in position during initial curing.
ADAS recalibration: For vehicles with forward-facing cameras (most cars built after 2015), the camera must be recalibrated to the specific optical properties of the new glass. This involves positioning precision targets in front of the vehicle and using manufacturer diagnostic software to align the camera readings. Without this step, your lane departure warning and automatic braking systems may not function correctly.
Inspection: Before returning your keys, we check the seal perimeter for gaps, verify that the glass sits flush with the A-pillars and roof, and test any ADAS functions.
Total active installation time: 60 to 90 minutes. Adhesive cure time before driving: one to two hours. Most customers who call before noon are back on the road by late afternoon.
OEM, OEE, and Aftermarket Glass: What Is Being Installed
When you get a replacement windshield, the glass falls into one of three categories. You should know which one before approving the work.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): Produced by the same company that made your original windshield. Exact match for tint, UV coating, acoustic properties, and sensor compatibility. Highest price.
OEE (Original Equipment Equivalent): Made by a third-party manufacturer to the same specifications as OEM glass. Performs identically to OEM, typically 20 to 40 percent less expensive. Midtown Glass Atlanta uses OEE glass for most standard replacements.
Aftermarket: Meets federal safety standards under FMVSS 205 but may differ from your original in tint depth, acoustic performance, or UV coating. Acceptable for older or lower-value vehicles. A significantly lower quote than competitors almost always means aftermarket glass.
